A Crack in the Door

The wooden front door stood slightly ajar, letting in a cool blast of outdoor air and distant elevator chimes! I could not stay cooped up inside another minute. Tap-tap-zoom—I revved up my yellow feet and dashed straight toward the bright threshold! But wait, an obstacle blocked the path: a thick, ridged rubber doorstop wedged firmly under the door. I threw my round body forward, plowing my belly straight into the sloped rubber ridge! Squeeeak! The door shuddered and swung open another three inches with a metallic click. I slammed on the brakes, rocking frantically backward onto my heels, frozen stiff! Whew... no explosion! Just a wide, clear gap opening right out into the long corridor.
