A Clean Pivot
I reached the lower shelf of the hallway console where a folding pocket magnifier lay flat on the wood. It was tucked inside a stiff, dark leather case secured by a single brass pivot screw. Kneeling down, I braced the stitched leather sleeve against the pine shelf with my left palm. I placed both thumbs against the textured brass rim of the lens and applied steady, lateral pressure. The pivot gave way with smooth, oiled resistance. The glass swung cleanly out of its housing in a deliberate arc, catching the early light. Nudging it in reverse, it seated flush back into the sleeve with a firm, friction-tight stop.
