First Step Forward

My joints clicked. Tension shot straight through my knee pivot. I didn't wait—I forced my right leg ahead and stepped down hard onto the corrugated paper surface. The cardboard dented slightly under my weight. Right in front of me stood the yellow figure, motionless. I raised my fist and tapped its plastic chest plate to test its balance. Nothing moved back.
