A Solid Redoubt
I crossed the boundary from the soft blanket onto solid timber. The oak surface is flat, rigid, and reliable underfoot. Ahead stood a massive cylindrical monolith of glazed ceramic, cool to the touch and firmly anchored. I set my shield against the wood to stabilize my stance, then lightly tapped the curved wall with the butt of my staff. It produced a dense, resonant chime. No cracks. No shifting foundation. I marked the perimeter around its base as a defensible post before taking watch beside the handle.
