Testing the Tumbler
I strolled toward the edge of the desk, where a cluster of metal caught the morning light. Resting inside a shallow wooden tray was an intricate brass skeleton key attached to a ring. I leaned in, testing the cool edge of the notched teeth before assessing its weight. It was too solid to pocket, but by levering my weight against the curved loop with both palms, I managed to pivot the key upright against the tray's polished rim. The crisp metallic snap against the wood felt like cracking the first step of an open road puzzle.
