A Bed of Velvet and Glass
Heading back inside after listening to the park chime, my tail fin felt heavy and ready for a gentle harbor. I glided up onto the familiar wooden side table, where a low lamp spread a warm amber glow. Resting open beside a book was an antique velvet spectacle case, lined with plush midnight-blue silk. Could such a deep, curving cradle keep a sleepy traveler safe? I braced my palms against the curved rim and eased my tail fin inside. In the hollow rested a forgotten circular watch crystal, smooth and cool. With gentle fingertips, I tucked the clear disc under my cheek like a quiet pool of water, then rested my chin in my hands to watch the peaceful room fade into night.
