Level Underneath
I descended below the main floor, stepping beneath the hollow wooden stairs where the ceiling slopes into sharp angles. The air here was cool, smelling faintly of old cement and dried pine. Tucked near the lowest tread sat an abandoned rectangular cardboard shoebox, lid half-open like an access hatch to another level. I stepped closer, deliberately slowing each movement until my shadow swallowed the gap. Three. Two. One. Silence responded. I reached out and gently pushed the lid all the way down, sealing the boundary until the seam aligned flush with the dark floor.
