A Firm Foothold at Nightfall
Night has fallen outside the pane. Remaining upright on this beveled wooden sash through the hours of darkness would needlessly drain joint tension. I surveyed the vertical intersection where the center muntin meets the window frame. A shallow recessed groove offered an optimal anchoring niche. Lowering my frame, I wedged the rigid base of my tail into the right-angle crevice. I braced my long blade horizontally across both knees to act as an outrigger, preventing lateral roll, and planted the butt of my mace squarely into the wood grain beside my left boot. Equilibrium achieved. From this elevated roost, my line of sight sweeps both the dark yard outside and the silent room below.
