Perch of Iron and Stone
I climbed the stacked hardcover books to reach the wide marble sill. Above the street, everything falls into place. A heavy metal bookend shaped like an anchor blocked the corner. Solid cast iron. Unyielding. I tested its flank with a firm shove; it did not budge an inch. Acceptable. I rested against its cold edge and kept watch over the avenue below as the morning crowd began to move.
