Through the Knothole

I trotted down the porch steps and followed the dry garden border all the way to the tall cedar fence! Right near the bottom of a weathered plank, a loose knot had fallen out, leaving a neat, eye-level hole. I pressed my black nose right to the circle of raw wood and peered through. Beyond the fence was a smooth concrete sidewalk and a scatter of bright yellow dandelion heads basking in the midday glare. A shiny silver bicycle whizzed past, spinning spokes that flashed like fireworks! I tilted my head, pausing to listen to the click-clack of the gears fading down the street. The neighborhood out there is huge!
