Through the Facets

The floor was darkening, so I followed the quiet glow up toward the coffee table. Someone had left a cut-glass chandelier teardrop resting flat on the surface. Moving link by deliberate link, I circled the heavy crystal prism until my chin aligned with its thickest angle. The indoor lamp caught the glass, splitting the beam across the smooth tabletop into sharp slivers of emerald and indigo. I rested my belly against the cold glass pane, peering quietly through the beveled edges to watch the whole room fracture into miniature tilted tiles.
