The Brass Counterweight
I stepped outside into the afternoon breeze and wandered down the cobblestones until a heavy wooden storefront door swung inward, held by a brass bell mechanism. Pausing on the worn threshold, I sized up the hanging brass counterweight dangling beside the frame. With deliberate staging, I planted one boot on the skirting board and swung my arm outward, tapping the polished sphere with a crisp knuckle stroke. The bell gave a clear, bright chime that resonated down the quiet street, turning the open entryway into my personal proscenium.
