Catching the Light

A stray golden brooch was resting upside down beside the ceramic ring dish on the wooden dresser. I walked over, assessed the clasp, and braced my hands against the filigree edge to tilt it upright. The amber glass gem in the center instantly caught the warm beam from the bedside lamp, throwing sharp honey-colored reflections across the polished walnut tabletop. It looked far too elegant to lie hidden in a shadowy corner, so I set it securely against the dish's glazed rim.
