The Heavy Metal Flap
I pushed past the heavy fire door and found a square chrome door set right into the hallway wall. It was a trash chute with a thick, spring-loaded handle! I didn't hesitate—I leaped up, hooked both arms over the cool metal bar, and pulled down with all my weight. Squeak! The steel flap tilted open into a steep, dark slide. A chilly breeze rushed out, but I planted my feet against the tiled wall and pushed the flat hatch back until it struck its frame with a solid clang! Everything snapped straight shut, completely tight and flush.
