A Wandering Beam
I climbed up from the low stool onto the wide pine windowsill. Noon light was streaming straight through a ribbed water glass, casting a tiny, trembling band of rainbow colors onto the pale wall. I paused... watching the bright stripe shiver whenever a branch swayed outside. Slowly, I lifted one paw and patted the colored edge. The wall felt cool and flat under my pads, but the violet light slipped right over my toes, painting them blue and gold. I pressed down again, soft and steady. It did not scatter. It stayed right there with me, silent and bright.
