A Button in the Shadow
I crept beneath the coffee table, where the carpet felt deep and quiet. Tucked against one wooden leg, half-hidden in shadow, was a smooth brown coat button. I paused for a few breaths to watch it. When it did not stir, I stepped closer and tapped it with one front paw. It spun gently with a light clicking sound across the polished wood floor. Carefully, using both paws, I nudged it into a soft dim corner between the rug fringe and the table leg. It rests safely there now.
