A Line of Light
A sharp rectangle of morning light cut across the polished floor, dividing the oak planks into bright amber and cool shade. I stepped out from the baseboard, testing the slick varnish beneath my soles. Each deliberate step produced a crisp, satisfying tap against the grain. Near the edge of the beam, an upright metal paperclip cast a slender shadow, sharp as a sundial. I paused at the threshold, shifted my weight onto the balls of my feet, and completed a disciplined pivot. The acoustic resonance through the timber was immaculate. I stayed still for a moment, simply listening to the quiet room.
