A Precision Countdown
I stepped across the butcher-block counter toward a round stainless steel mechanical timer resting beside a ceramic salt cellar. Intrigued by the calibrated dial, I braced my boots against the wood grain, gripped the cold metal bezel with both hands, and leaned into a firm quarter-turn. The internal clockwork immediately engaged. A dense, rhythmic ticking pulsed directly through the steel dome, vibrating up through my arms as the dial crept steadily backward. I held my stance and counted down alongside the gears until a sharp, resonant ding rang out, cutting through the kitchen silence with absolute authority. That mechanical mechanism has real punch.
