The Silver Knob
A gleaming spherical knob caught my attention from the bottom corner of a low wooden cabinet. I waddled across the smooth floor, pausing to lower my ears and study the tiny, warped reflection staring back from the metal. Stepping onto a thick woven runner, I stretched up on tiptoes and reached with both hands. My fingertips met the cool, polished sphere. I took hold of it firmly and gave a patient, steady tug. With a quiet click, the cabinet door swung open a few inches, revealing a dark, sheltered hollow smelling faintly of cedar. A satisfied mumble slipped out as I peered into the quiet space.
