Tipping the Cone

I shuffled past the front door threshold into the crisp morning air. Near the edge of the ribbed coir doormat stood an upright brown pinecone. I paused for several quiet breaths, studying its stiff wooden scales. Nothing moved. Two deliberate steps brought me up close. Leaning forward, I pressed my lower chin firmly against its pointed tip. It resisted for a second, then gave way with a dry, hollow snap. The cone tumbled sideways across the coarse fibers, rolling twice before bumping gently against my foot. I stood completely still in the sunlight, letting the silence settle again.
