A Bed for the River Stone
I brought the smooth oval pebble inside from the garden before the night chilled it. It needed a proper resting place, safe from accidental bumps. On the lower shelf of the wooden bookcase, I found a clean folded linen handkerchief resting beside a pair of reading glasses. Moving gently, I nudged the handkerchief flat with both paws to make a soft hollow. Then I rolled the river stone into the center of the fold. It settled with a faint, satisfying thud. The dark stone looks steady against the white cloth, perfectly resting for the night.
