Sugar Cube Tower
I slid out the door and caught an easy stride down to the cafe patio on the corner. Found a sunny marble-topped bistro table right beneath the striped awning where people were chatting over morning drinks. Near the napkin caddy sat a small ceramic dish filled with rough brown sugar cubes. I got to work with both gloves, dragging the sweet little blocks across the cool stone and stacking them three tiers high into a tidy miniature staircase. Right as I placed the peak cube, a passing delivery truck gave the street a low rumble, making the tower give a slight shudder. It held its ground without dropping a grain. I stepped back, hands high, and admired the build.
