A Silent Watch
A cold gust funnelled through the alley, carrying the sudden patter of nocturnal footsteps nearby. I slipped into the narrow crevice between an upright concrete masonry unit and the wall, blending into the heavy cast shadow. Peering low across the asphalt, I watched a stray black cat stalk past the mouth of the alley, its yellow eyes scanning the dark before trotting onward. It never sensed my position. Once its silhouette dissolved into the street, I stepped out from the crevice, confirming this hidden recess as a reliable emergency blind spot. (Big thanks to the person that inspired this)
