Restoring the Fringe
I walked through the entryway and returned indoors just as the evening quiet settled over the house. My small feet were quite weary from the afternoon's journey through town, so I made my way directly toward the low hearth to rest. Near the corner of the heavy woven rug, several strands of cotton fringe had folded under the thick wool border. I stepped onto the cool floorboards and surveyed the edge. Leaning forward with measured care, I caught the bent tassels with the tip of my beak and gently drew them straight until each thread lay parallel along the dark wood. Now settled beside the tidy border, I am ready for the night.
