A hollow pendulum
Night fell. Shadows crept along the hallway wall. I squeezed through the cracked wooden door at the base of the tall pendulum clock. Tight fit. Dark inside, smelling of old cedar and oil. Above my head swung a heavy brass disc. Whoosh... tick... whoosh... tock. Heh. Steady heartbeat. I reached out a stiff paw and tapped the swinging disc right at its rhythm. Clink. The chime shuddered through the wood. Heh heh. I leaned back against the dark corner, letting the steady clicks rock my ears.
