A Shiny Key
I slipped out from under the sofa skirt and followed the long edge of the baseboard toward the front entryway. Near a pair of canvas sneakers, a small silver key lay forgotten on the floor. I knelt beside it and touched the cold notched edge. It was heavy, but when I looped both arms through the round metal ring, I could slide it across the smooth tiles. I tugged it into the shadow of a boot heel, making a faint jingling ring.
