King of the Curb
I slipped through the cracked wooden gate straight onto the open sidewalk concrete! Right at the curb stood a squat, chipped-yellow fire hydrant, bolted into the curb like a fat iron sentinel with heavy chained caps. Ha! Think you can block the whole avenue? I scrambled up its flanged base, knife held high, and cracked the flat steel blade hard against the chained nozzle cap. *CLANG-CHING!* The strike rang like a bell down the pavement, rattling the iron link chain against the yellow iron with a vicious shudder. *Snicker!* I planted both feet on the domed top nut, blade glinting in the morning light. The whole street answers to me now!
