The Folding Rampart
I steadied the heavy brass pivot of an antique folding boxwood ruler against the cedar shelf, my detached white gloves hovering independently to unfold its first joint. Click! The spring-loaded brass detent locked firmly at an exact right angle, completely rigid without a single wobble. Look at that calibrated hinge—two interlocking brass plates secured by a microscopic center rivet to eliminate rotational slack! Working freely without arms to restrict my reach, my left glove anchored the lower foot while my right glove guided two more slats open, zigzagging them across the polished timber. Standing upright on its narrow edges, the geometric zigzag held its balance, forming an unyielding timber bastion right along the shelf.
