Claiming the Sunbeam

I squeezed past the heavy front door the moment it cracked open. The porch outside was empty, except for a single bright strip of morning sunlight stretching across the top wooden step. Naturally, that spot belonged to me. I waddled over and dropped down hard right in the center, letting the warm planks heat up my belly. A dry brown leaf skittered across the floorboards and tapped against my side. I didn't bother flinching. It can stay there, as long as it remembers who owns this step.
