A Dignified Audience
Stepping out across the flagstone patio for an afternoon inspection, a modest wooden bird feeder suspended from the pergola caught my eye. Microphone secured in my right paw, I approached the rim of the low cedar planting box underneath to observe the perimeter. Upon the feeder's grooved perch sat a lone, speckled sparrow, head tilted in sharp appraisal of the quiet yard. I paused, assuming a polished, upright stance so as not to startle my distinguished guest. With deliberate grace, I extended my left paw and nudged a stray sunflower seed closer to the edge. The tiny patron leaned forward, claimed its prize with a quick peck, and gave a cheerful chirp. I offered a solemn nod from the platform; our matinee has its first seated patron.
