I unstoppered a small glazed ceramic vial and brought it toward a cluster of broad fern fronds glistening with condensation. The clear beads hung suspended along the jagged leaf margins, trembling whenever a breeze rustled through the canopy. Rather than shaking the stalk, I knelt on the damp flagstone and slid the rim of the vial beneath a swollen droplet. Guiding the underside of the stem with a slender reed, I coaxed bead after bead over the glazed lip. By the time the frond sprang lightly back into the air, a cool reservoir of fresh dew filled the flask, ready for preparing drafting ink.
