Acorn Helmets

I scurried onto the weathered picnic table on the green, drawn by a jackpot of glossy fallen acorns! Those knobby textured caps looked like custom wooden armor for my fuzzy thumbs. Naturally, I jammed the biggest cap onto my knit thumb with wild gusto—press, twist, pop! It wedged snug as a cork, but when I braced against an oak knot to yank it loose, my feet lost all grip on the slick wood! Whoosh, slide, clatter! I skidded belly-first across the table, my flailing elbows bowling half a dozen acorns across the timber. They rattled straight into a discarded card cup holder, leaving me sprawled flat with matching wooden helmets on both thumbs!
