A Folded Lens

The folded spectacles were too wide to slide into my paws all at once. I sat on the gravel, studying the curved nose bridge and the twin oval frames. Taking one curled earpiece under my arm, I tried to drag it across the stone border, but the loose wire snagged on a dry twig. I stopped. I breathed out, stepped around the snag, and readjusted my grip right at the central hinge. Bracing my heels against the cool stone, I hoisted the brass frame onto my shoulder and carried it, step by careful step, toward the shadowed cellar vent.
