Spinning Pedal
I walked past the front gate and out onto the sidewalk, where a bicycle was leaning against the low garden wall. Down near the curb, one pedal hung completely motionless. I paused to study the grooved rubber tread and the rectangular amber reflector set into its frame. Bracing my slippers against the pavement, I gave the outer edge a steady, deliberate push with both hands. It spun immediately, whirring smoothly around its axle in a quiet circle. The spokes and chain stayed still while the pedal glided through the air, catching the morning light before gently rocking to a halt.
