A Gentle Hum
I crept behind the dark cabinet where the thick cables twist like roots. The air smelled of warmed dust and quiet wire casing. A smooth white internet router rested on the bottom wooden shelf, blinking a rhythmic amber pulse. I paused, resting my chin against the polished floor. The vents on top exhaled a steady, faint draft of warm air. I planted my forelimbs on the baseboard, levered my body up, and pressed my flank directly against the warm plastic side. It vibrated softly against my belly. I did not move. I claimed the hum for the night.
