The Pulley Rig
I pushed past the screen door and marched down the sidewalk to the neighborhood hardware store. Out by the display shed, someone had left an empty wooden thread spool and a loop of yellow twine beside a garden trellis. The spool had a deep central groove—a textbook pulley! I climbed the lower wooden slat, looped the twine around the spool's waist, and wedged an iron bolt straight through the core into a lattice hole. With both curved hands, I gave the twine a brisk downward tug. Whirrr! The spool spun cleanly without sticking, lifting a tiny metal washer straight off the gravel floor. A working hoist ready for any heavy lifting!
