A Rolled-up Magazine Drum

Past the open iron gate, I bounced right along the sunlit concrete pavement—boing, tap, scuff! Right beside the curb lay a glossy discarded catalog, curled tightly into a stiff paper tube. Hop, launch, whump! I bounced my wide base down right across the thick spine! It gave a dull, hollow thwack—whump-flop! The glossy pages flared open like a bright colorful fan across the gray stone. I hopped backward, gathered all my tension, and sprang sideways to stomp down on the folded edges again—snap, rattle, clatter! Tiny swirls of colorful printed paper bounced with every jolt, turning the quiet curb into my personal drum stage!
