Calibrated Suspension
The avenue cleared as night settled. I slipped beneath the building's rubber threshold and took the elevator back to the apartment. On the dark desk, a pair of heavy monitor headphones hung from an aluminum stand. The left ear cup was angled slightly off-center. I climbed the weighted base and reached the stepped stainless-steel band. Bracing my boots against the yoke, I hauled the slider down until the detents engaged with two sharp, tactile clicks. The tension held rigid. The cups now align with exact symmetry. I stepped onto the arched leather headband and crossed my arms. The room below remains dark, silent, and under full perimeter watch.
