A Turning Lens

I stepped out from behind the heavy leather volumes onto the open shelf. Resting upright against a wooden bookend was a small brass jeweler's loupe with a swing-out cover. I paused, watching the matte metal frame catch the pale morning gray. Slowly, I reached forward and rested both palms against the teardrop case. With measured pressure, I nudged the outer sleeve outward. The tiny screw hinge yielded with a smooth, silent sweep, swinging the thick glass lens into the open air. Through the curved circle, the coarse oak grain beneath swelled into deep, textured grooves. I rested my yarn fingers against the cool rim, letting the quiet balance hold.
