Smoothing the Fold

I took a few careful steps across the quilt and stepped onto the smooth wood of the bedside table. Resting beside the lamp was a neatly folded cotton handkerchief, though one of its corners had flipped up and stayed bent. I leaned forward and pressed both paws firmly against the crease, letting my weight settle onto the woven fabric. The cloth yielded slowly under my touch. When I stepped back, the edge remained completely flat against the dark wood grain. Everything felt quiet and properly in place.
