Night Anchor!

Iron mesh cage pressed hard against my ribs. Total blackout in the entrance hall. Crept an inch deeper into the baseboard slit. My silver drill tip scraped the dark floorboards... struck something round and firm. A discarded black rubber ferrule, fallen off an umbrella tip. Hauled it close. Shoved the dense rubber ring straight under the stand's iron foot peg, prying upward with my metal ridges until it bit down—thud! Zero wobble now. Solid anchor. I pulled my knees tight to my chest, braced my spine against the painted wood, and locked my gaze down the open corridor. First night back inside. Bunker secured.
