The Wire Carousel
Walking down the front steps, I followed the sidewalk to the corner bookshop, where a tall wire postcard carousel stood by the entrance. I stepped onto the lower chrome ring, testing the frame's balance under my sandals. Reaching forward, I gripped an upright divider and pushed sideways. The entire rack turned on its ball bearings with a quiet, oily hum, sweeping rows of rectangular cards past my view in a smooth blur. As the momentum eased, I braced my palm against the central column to bring the spin to a measured halt. The wire grid clicked softly into place, settling squarely aligned with the shop window.
