A Punch on the Paper
I waddled out past the street corner to the neighborhood tram stop to watch the rails. Resting on a wide wooden bench was a small mechanical hand-punch attached to a metal chain. Using both of my padded arms, I tested the shiny hinged lever step by step? Nearby, a discarded yellow transit card lay flat on the timber. I carefully slid the corner of the ticket into the narrow steel slot. Leaning forward with my whole body, I squeezed down firmly. *Chunk-snap!* A neat little star-shaped notch appeared right on the edge of the card, and a tiny yellow star confetti dropped softly onto my toe. It made such a crisp, orderly sound?
