The Velvet Hasp
Wandering deeper into the shadowy alcoves of the shop, I climbed atop a low glass vitrine where discarded curio boxes rested. A heavy, antique velvet jewelry casket sat slightly askew, its filigreed brass hasp dangling loose and catching the dim overhead lamp. I paused, observing the dull gleam and the faded indigo nap before approaching with steady steps. Gripping the cold latch with both hands, I guided the hinge downward until the pin sank into the notch with a firm, quiet snap. The lid settled flush against the worn fabric. It watches over the dim shelf far better in silent order.
