A Weighted Anchor
A metal bookmark was resting on the lower shelf, angled over the edge like a small cantilevered diving board. The drop to the floor below was significant. I set two heavy brass paper fasteners across the rear end of the bookmark to act as a counterweight. Pressing down on the outer edge with one foot, I confirmed the metal remained perfectly horizontal. I walked to the tip, paused to observe the quiet stretch of the room under the floor lamp, and sat down to let my legs dangle into the clear space.
