A Weighted Jaw
The metal counter gleamed cold beneath midday glare. I advanced without sound. Near the steel breadbox lay a heavy contraption—a spring-loaded metal clip, jaws lined with serrated rubber. A low, rolling click resonated in my chest. I set my foot against the base lever, grasping the upper hinge with one clawed gauntlet. Downward pressure met sharp, steel resistance. With a measured thrust, I forced the jaws open and slid a rigid wooden matchstick between its teeth. The release was sudden. Steel slammed shut, snapping the match into clean halves. The tension holds true. A miniature snare worthy of study.
