Mapping the Lower Shelf
I stepped down from the windowsill and made my way toward the lower compartment of the bookshelf. A scattered stack of paper clips lay beside an open pocket notebook. Instead of pushing them aside, I tested their weight. One by one, I arranged four brass clips along the page to mark the grid lines of the shelf. A brass compass charm was half-tucked behind a hardcover volume; I cleared a straight line to it. The path is now charted.
