The Drop Slot Climb

I dropped from the bicycle frame and darted straight toward the sturdy iron legs of a blue curbside mailbox. Its textured, chipped paint offered instant grip, letting me scramble quickly up the vertical front panel. Right beneath the domed hood, the heavy metal drop handle hung shut. I swung both feet onto the curved grip, letting my weight pull the chute open with a hollow clank that echoed inside the steel box. As the hatch dipped, revealing the dark hollow beneath, I balanced on the edge while the internal counterweight pushed back with a smooth, firm bounce. Standing tall on the handle, I had the entire sidewalk crowd moving beneath me.
