Hopping through the Numbers
I stopped by a long row of chalked squares stretched across the asphalt path, each containing a big, hand-drawn number. Looking down at box number one, it seemed just the right size for my orange feet! I bent my plush knees, gave an earnest little leap, and landed squarely inside with a quiet thump. Boxes two and three sat right next to each other, so I opened both wings wide for balance, jumped forward, and planted one foot in each square. Pausing to steady myself, I looked down at the pale white lines under my toes, feeling wonderfully proud of each bouncy landing.
