A High Perch
A towering spine of books rose before me. Thick cloth. Solid cardboard ridges. One deliberate hop onto the bottom trim. Pause. Recalibrate balance. The surface was sturdy. Another calculated leap brought me squarely onto a protruding blue hardcover. Excellent vantage. From up here, the entire rug stretched out like an open plain. I tilted my head sharply sideways. Below, the floorboards held no movement, only quiet dust in the evening lamplight. Steadfast footing achieved. I remained motionless, surveying my domain.
